During a night of camping, this single tree trunk became the unofficial, quiet member of our group. It stood just a few feet from where my hiking companions and I had set up camp for the night. Distinct from the denser forest growth, it was certainly not alone. Its close proximity to our camp allowed it to be a constant presence throughout the entire evening. Most of the night was spent sitting on the ground with my friends. Even as we joked and told stories, my gaze kept returning to the tree’s static form. Its absolute stillness in the face of our animated circle made it a compelling focus, a quiet, resolute presence that was a welcome companion during our brief stay in the woods.

Photographed in the windswept mountains in Glacier National Park this tree stands strong. As I stood upon the mountain top, I was able to understand why the trees where shaped this way. The wind was constantly blowing, never really allowing the branches to grow in any other direction. This tree is a good reminder of the ruggedness and harshness that happens in the natural world, yet it's resilience is a reminder that one can grow strong through adversity.

I often dream about being out on the trails. It really doesn’t matter what the weather is doing, though I prefer days around 60 degrees. If there is some morning mist, that’s all the better. Daydream represents the feeling of my perfect day on the trail. The sunlight draws me further down the trail, ready to explore new locations and experience more of natures beauty. There is an ever so slight mist in the air. I am present in what the trail is willing to reveal, and a slight tinge of anxious enthusiasm for what the mist is covering up.
Like any dream, we never know what is around the next corner. Let’s go explore.

The Osage Orange tree is one of my favorites to look at where I go trail running. Once used to make hedges before the invention of barbed wire, this tree, when trimmed will create a very tough border to stop animals from moving through. This grouping with their bent over trunks is probably my favorite section of trail where I live. I try to visit it once a week.

The last stage of Autumn. The leaves have moved from their beautiful color differences to the ground. In some cases however the leaves refuse to let go. We all understand that will to keep going, when things get hard, we hang on, just as these leaves are doing. The date of their final release was unknown, but on this November day, these leaves where doing just that. Holding on.

The early morning frost and a cold winter’s day. For a few brief moments, this frost edged the fern fronds as the sun edged its way into the forest. These ferns line the edges of the trails that I hike and run. It’s a nice reprieve from the thorns and sticker bushes that typically line the trails near my home.
