Climbing the dunes is 2 steps forward, 1 step back process. The sand gives way with every step, and a mis-step can mean a sand avalanche. Sometimes this can create the “Singing Sands” as you ascend.

The wind blew relentlessly across the dunes. I wore special sunglasses with side shields to protect my eyes as much as possible from the tiny grains of sand as they bombarded my face.

After sleeping overnight in the dunes, I awoke to find all previous trace of my footprints blown away. Buried in these new paths somewhere, was where I had previously walked.

When the wind stops, all falls silent. The only thing that remains is you and the sand.

All that remains is this twisted part of a tree. How it ended way up in the dunes is a mystery to me. While there is some plant growth and wildlife, nothing of this size was anywhere to be seen.

Upon exploring the next morning, I found the sand had blown into so many patterns and layers depending on the type of sand. I found this sand structure and it reminded me so much of the beautiful wood grain that I see in my every day life.

Walking into the endless dunes feels both like an escape and adventure. It is like stepping into another world. Surrounded by the peaks of the Sanger de Cristo Mountains you venture over one dune, just to find another. This continues for 30 square miles. How long you want to travel depends on how much gear, food, and water you want to carry.
While hiking into the dunes with a back-country permit in hand, I came across these other adventure seekers doing the same thing. Heading into the dunes to sleep.
